How do I stop unqualified people from booking my discovery calls?
Put something with a cost in front of the calendar. An application filters a little, showing the price filters more, and asking for a small payment filters most, because the people who will not spend $100 on your opinion were never going to spend $3,000 on your programme.
1. Accept what a free call selects for
A free call is most attractive to the person who intends to spend the least, which is why calendars fill while pipelines do not. That is not bad luck, it is the design working as built.
2. Show the price before the booking link
The single cheapest change. A price on the page removes the whole category of call that ends with "I had no idea it was that much", and it costs you nothing but the bookings you did not want.
3. Replace the application form with a paid question
Forms collect claims. A payment collects evidence. Asking someone to pay for a real answer to their situation gives you their problem in their words, paid for, before you decide whether to offer a call at all.
4. Offer the call only to the people worth it
Once the paid step exists, the call stops being a lead-generation activity and becomes something you extend to people you have already helped once. Inverting that order is what frees the calendar.
5. Keep the free route open in public
Your content stays free and your short replies stay free. The thing that got priced is the deep one-to-one work, which was never supposed to be the free sample.
Where a paid question fits
For step 3, Nudge gives you a priced question page: they write the situation, pay up front, and you answer when it suits you, keeping 90%, with nothing captured unless you reply. Coaches commonly price this tier deliberately high because qualification, not volume, is the point. A paid application fee or a priced consultation does the same job.
Common questions
Should coaches charge for discovery calls?
Charging for the call is one option, but putting a paid asynchronous step before the call usually works better. It qualifies the same way without spending 45 minutes to find out, and it gives you the person's situation in writing first.
Does asking for payment before a call reduce leads?
It reduces bookings and usually raises closed revenue, because the bookings it removes are the ones that were never going to convert. Count clients per month rather than calls per month when judging it.
